Newer and better designed total knee implants are becoming available for patients. More bio-compatible materials coupled with computer assisted designs are allowing better “fitting” to most patients at the time of surgery. Modern Total Knee systems now have some particularly positive updates in design. I like the more natural shaped implants that “fit” more sizes of femurs – and which also improves patella tracking. Modern Polyethylene components will resist oxidative degradation and wear over time better. Different surgeons choose which knee replacement design they are most satisfied with. It is good for patients to learn more about the actual implant choices, and ask their surgeon what they like to use and why!
